The COAT field team travelled along the west coast of Svalbard in July 2016 to survey the most productive of high Arctic vegetation, and begin establishing a robust long-term observation system. Main focus being on the sea bird influenced tundra, this field work captured the greenest of the green on Svalbard.

Snow season effects on grassland productivity in sub-Arctic Norway http://www.framshorts.com/video/snow-season-effects-on-grassland-productivity-in-sub-arctic-norway-5/ Wed, 11 Nov 2015 11:21:03 +0000 http://www.framshorts.com/?post_type=video&p=681 Winters are warming more rapidly than summers at high northern latitudes. This has strong effects on the duration of the snow cover and on the insulating properties of the snow. This has cascading effects on life under the snow and in the soil.

Thin ice studies in the Arctic: N-ICE2015 http://www.framshorts.com/video/thin-ice-studies-in-the-arctic-n-ice2015/ Thu, 28 May 2015 10:30:56 +0000 http://www.framshorts.com/?post_type=video&p=646 The research vessel Lance was frozen into the Arctic ice pack in the midst of the polar night in January 2015, under the auspices of Norwegian Polar Institute led project N-ICE2015 to study the effects and feedbacks of the thinning of Arctic sea ice. For 6 months the ship will serve as platform for about a hundred scientists from more than ten nations studying the interaction of the atmosphere, ice, ocean and marine ecosystem, to help us understand future changes better.

WINNIT – Northern nature under stress http://www.framshorts.com/video/winnit-northern-nature-under-stress/ Mon, 18 May 2015 07:53:14 +0000 http://www.framshorts.com/?post_type=video&p=633 High northern latitudes are increasingly exposed to the combination of extreme winter climate and deposition of long-distance dispersed nitrogen pollution. The nature in the north is vulnerable, and these combined stresses may over time affect the composition of plant species and carbon uptake.
How will North-Norwegian ecosystems tolerate unstable winters and nitrogen pollution?

From sea urchin deserts to rich kelp forests http://www.framshorts.com/video/from-sea-urchin-deserts-to-rich-kelp-forests/ Thu, 21 Aug 2014 08:41:40 +0000 http://www.framshorts.com/?post_type=video&p=584 Imagine if some calamity were to destroy your favourite forest; if the rich environment that harboured animals, birds and insects were to vanish. Something very similar happened a few decades ago in the ocean off the coast of Norway. But with time, the undersea forest is recovering. Scientists from NIVA are watching the process closely.
